Physical Examination
• Lymph node enlargement in the neck or in the region above the collarbones.
• Enlarged liver or another mass in the abdomen.
• Signs of a mass in one lung such as decreased breath sounds, noises in the lung that are not usually present, or
areas of dullness when the chest is tapped with the fingers.
Blood and Other Tests
• Sputum examination for malignant cells .
Imaging
• If a chest x-ray shows an abnormality, this does not establish a diagnosis until some tissue is obtained and
examined under the microscope.
• CT scans of the chest and often the liver and adrenal glands.
• Sometimes CT or MRI scans of the brain.
Endoscopy and Biopsy
• Fiber-optic bronchoscopy with brushing or biopsy.
